I like wearing my sweatshirts...even when it's in the 70's and 80's!

Where I live in Torrance, it generally never gets to be above the mid 80's, so I'm a wimp for the heat, too...I hate hate hate it, would rather be cold!

Used to feel the same way. I ate cheese every day, sometimes several times a day. Cow's Milk was real food and Soy Milk was "chalky nasty crap". Back then it was pretty nasty, today it's a bit better, though carrageenan is nasty too.

I got older and acquired a food allergy. For a long time I thought it was just some odd bug. Started having all sorts of gross nasty symptoms. Finally it got totally out of hand, like I couldn't digest food.

Figured it might be milk related as some things followed eating stuff like pizza or pesto alfredo. So I cut that stuff out.

One day I had a tuna sandwich and "got sick". Couldn't understand because I didn't consume anything dairy. Read the package - "Sodium Casienate". Told my doctor, who said, "Ah, Casein allergy! Nasty one that is!".

Cut out all casein and felt fine. It's in a lot of places including junk foods, sausage and anywhere that a food must be "bound" together.

There still isn't a reliable test for such an allergy except through careful diet study. I had the lactose intolerance test, where you drink some lactose with radioactive hydrogen, and then breathe into a balloon. I passed that one with flying colors...

Casein allergy really really rare it turns out. Oh well, there are worse things, like peanut allergy or shellfish allergy. I just get sick, I don't go into shock and need injections of drugs.

So the moral of the story being, be glad that you're not so affected... but do try the stuff out. Soy is good when you're about twenty years or so older and starting to go into menopause. Might as well get used to it now.

By the way, the term "milk" is a misnomer. It's more a beverage, but that term makes it sound snooty or suspect. Good quality soy milk today is almost indistinguishable from cow's milk, at least until you cook with it.

I have a friend here at work with the same casein allergy. Interesting.
