He said the engine turned over but it wouldn't start. If the car was in a gear other than P the starter motor wouldn't even work.

In most AT cars, it can only be started when the transmission is disengaged, ie the car won't start surging forward the moment you start the engine. As I never owned an AT Yaris I'm not in the best position to say if N would start the car, perhaps it would because the transmission is still disengaged.
When an MT Yaris requires the clutch to be depressed to the floor to engage the starter motor, I would be surprised that you could start an AT Yaris in gear, or even neutral for that matter.
