Yep, that's what they are saying. 17F what is that about?

That will be a pain. Will have to bring lots of doggies inside. That's way too cold for them.

It's in the Netherlands. There will be always a fight against weather conditions.
So we're always be able to see asphalt over here

We'll hear tales about Southerners driving in Snow. They go very fast but don't know when to brake or how to steer. Tragedy ensues when a bunch of 'em come together in one place and try to violate Boson conversation - protons, neutrons and stuff made out of them cannot occupy the same space at the same time. In plain English they pile up.

Us Yankees can drive at 50mph in virgin snow, but we know when to put the brakes on, how to steer and use snow tires.

Helpful hint for Southern Drivers...

1. If it snows where you are find an empty parking lot. Practice skids, fast turns and s-turns in the snow. You'll be surprised at how unresponsive your car can become when you have all season radials and there is snow under them. Learn that unresponsiveness and adapt your driving on the road with it in mind.

Please note in my "winter driving stories" I often will try out skids, S-turns and panic braking before leaving work. I do this, often each time the weather turns foul. I learn how bad things really are in the car that I am going to use in the weather I intend to drive in.

Light on the pedal, light on the brakes and light on the steering wheel. Delicate movements always. You'll see how true this is by practicing in parking lots that are snow or ice covered.

Prepare yourself for the weather conditions that you intend to drive in!

The following involve a rule known as the CK Curve - under a minimum speed most vehicle to vehicle collisions are the result of the speeds of the two cars being too different rather than both being too fast.

2. Get used to looking in your rear view mirror a lot and expect someone to come on you fast. Be ready to get out of their way. If you go around a corner or bend expect someone to come up on you fast.

3 If you don't know the route then don't drive fast. If you do not drive fast be ready to get out of the way. Do not hog the passing lane (left lane in the US) but expect that lane to be untraveled and for folks to ride fast in the right lane.

4. Always be ready to run off of the road so that if you see a pileup you can evade it. I dodged several collisions over the years by going off road. Please mind that people involved in vehicle accidents will sometimes get out of their cars and then sit on guardrails and off to the side of the road. I'd rather hit a car than a person, so be ready to hit the pileup rather than a human being.

If you don't think you have time to react - to see if someone is sitting on the side of the road and that you might run them over - then YOU ARE GOING TOO DAMN FAST!

5. Don't drink and drive. If you think that drinking and driving is tough when the roads are good it's damn near impossible if you're under the influence. No freaking way can you keep a car on the road when you're over steering and weaving around on ice and snow.

The life you save might be your own.

Don't be lazy and expect wind to do it for you, have you ever hit a sheet of ice going 100km/h? I did its not fun and can get you killed if you are not ready for it.
Yes..this is really important. I hate driving near anybody who only has a shoebox-sized area cleared on their windshield to see out of.

Do they shut down the schools when it gets that cold? They do here....not sure how that's going to work if we have a long stretch of bitter cold.

well yeah my family is from there, but I was born in a French island off the coast of africa (kinda like Hawaii, it's french but nowhere near the mainland). Whenever I went back to mainland france it was for holidays, and more often than not, in the summer.... SO I have only seen snow twice in my life

Oh wow, thanks for sharing Thomas. I could be a really good friend and offer you to switch locales for a few months next winter...you know, so you could enjoy some snow. haha

It's going to be 80 today. My sister is flying in from Chicago and will just explode from the temperature differential.
