For those out there that think Mobil 1 is the best on the market, you need to do your research. Valvoline was running national ad campaigns claiming that there full synthetic oil provided 4x better protection than Mobil 1. Mobil 1 sued and their case was thrown out when Valvoline showed up in court with the independent lab tests showing the results. They also did more testing and found that the current Mobil 1 formulation does not meet the minimum API SM or ILSAC GF-4 specifications either. Seems they have been resting on their laurels and got behind the rest of the industry. I love it. I have the letter right here in front of me.

I have always been a mobile 1 user. I have changed that though, today.

after doing some research i have found that Pennzoil Platinum is cheaper and seems to have a lower viscosity at cold temperatures (i live in alaska) than mobile 1. i was going to use Valvoline SynPower, but that was a dollar a quart more for similar performance.

bought 4 quarts and a mobile filter for 26$ at walmart, and changed today.

bah.... after doing more reading. both synpower and pennzoil platinum are group 3. as are castrol (made in usa, german is group 4) and even some M1 products are group 3. in 3K miles im switching again to Amsoil (a true group 4 PAO), there are dealers local to me so i can get a case for 120$ or so.

Oh, you guys know I just HAVE to reply. Only Redline, some Amsoils, and some Motuls are TRUE synthetic oils. EVERYTHING else is just dino oil being marketed to you as synthetic - what a FARCE. And only group: V is the good one. So, no one runs the REAL good stuff except a couple guys here who run Motul 300v. Man, try some group V stuff if you want to see what a real synth does, Otherwize you are just paying for 'premium' mineral oil - which is what all API SM should be anyway.

Check this:
http://www.kemopro.com/productinfo/engine.html

I'm considering trying it next OC; even if its just SJ

ps: HA, see I didnt mention that, according to Ashland, Mobil-1 5W-30 doesnt even meet the current american petroleum institute standards and causes excessive valvetrain wear on cold starts - I AM getting better

I dont know about CHEAP, but Motul E-tech 5W-30 in the GM or Renault citroen spec should do the trick for toyota warranty . I think some Mod shops are gray-marketing it in the US - like LTB motorsports. Probably cost $10/litre shipped to your door. Then there is some redlines and Amsoils - havent tried them (yet!)

My dealer put in Castrol for the free oil change but I usually use Valvoline Synpower, 5W-30.

I buy Carlube fully synthetic (not sure if you guys have heard of the brand), its about US$20 every 4 litres. It gets changed out every 6000 miles so I don't believe in buying ridiculously priced oil.
