A belt tension gauge should be used to check the tension on the belt and to insure it is with in spec...

yeah well easier than going out and buying a belt tensioner gauge is to just 'eyeball' the deflection.....

where the belt is stretched between the farthest pulleys, push down on it it shouldn't move maybe 1/2" to 3/4" down ---any more and add tension......

'easier' is not necessarily correct. same with bolt torque.

if you do not have the correct tools,
you have no business in the engine compartment

(not -you-, I mean anyone)

anyhow, water pumps do fail and they are easy to replace. they should last >180,000 though

Someone told me if you can turn your belt to the side with one finger, its tight enough, so thats what I have been doing, I might have to tighten it a littttttle bit just a little because it has been squeaking bad on cold starts only when it warms up its find.

and my water pump hasn't had any problems yet, i have 50,000 miles on my car with the whole nst pulley setup (10 % underdrive crank, wp, alt.)
