Two different dealers tried to push the XD on me when I expressed my disgust over the lack of a M/T in the 5 door Yaris. They jumped into an immediate song and dance about how the XD is built on the same platform, ect. It almost seemed well rehearsed or preprogrammed. I truly think that's what is behind it all. I'm not buying the whole market research smoke screen. Toyota is simply trying to protect the Scion brand by limiting the Yaris offerings. Scion offers two 5 doors with M/T's (XB & XD). Yaris at first offered only a 3 door LB and 4 door sedan which didn't conflict with Scion's offerings. Scion had already brought to market the asthetically challenged and uninspiring XD 5 door. Sales were sluggish and the public reception is not what they expected. Meanwhile, the Honda Fit proves to be a sales success as does the Nissan Versa 5 door. Toyota realizes they need to get in on the 5 door compact game so they bring the 5 door Yaris in but deliberately without a M/T option in a vain effort to promote the lackluster XD as the "enthusiast" or "youth" 5 door option. Toyota's alleged "market research" claims there's just no interest in a 5 door with a M/T in the US. Honda, Nissan, Kia, and Suzuki's sales of 5 door M/T's suggest otherwise. If the complaints registered on this forum are respresentative of the buyers' wants, I'd say there is a demand for it. Where exactly did they do their "market research?" I'm guessing at a Scion board or dealers meeting. The market research excuse is often just good ole fashioned BS for customer manipulation. "Market research has indicated that there's no demand for what you're asking for, so you'd better just buy what we already offer." The very fact that you're asking for it proves there's a degree of demand.
