Question for dual-single-DIN installs...
...what's the best way to accomplish this feat?
I managed to corral the stock Toyota mounts for now, but everything looks sunken in a bit too far for when I get the 180mm surround trim. I'm thinking it's because while I got the stock stamped-steel Toyota mounts to work, they're not quite the right alignment for the task. I already have the single-DIN Metra kit, Crutchfield included that for free. If I picked up the double-DIN Metra kit would that let me continue mounting the lower CB with side-bolts (the only mounting option for that, sadly) but still give me some way to properly attach the 'cage' for the upper head unit? Or do the 'cages' always end up seeming a little flimsy even when installed correctly, compared to just bolting things down in place like I'm used to with stuff like CB's?

You can either try to re-drill the stock brackets for where you need the new holes, or add a thin piece of sheet metal on either side, bolted to the existing brackets, to extend the brackets to where the mounting holes are.
When I installed a Single DIN HU over a single DIN DVD player in my Xterra I had to add sheetmetal, as the DVD player was designed for under mount, so its front holes didn't line up and its rear holes were well past the depth of the OEM bracket. |

That's the thing. My HU has *NO* holes to mount to directly. So I'm stuck trying to hook up the 'lock into cage' to whatever I use. The Single-DIN Metra kit Clutchfield included with my order? It snaps right onto that and holds on tight, but there's just nowhere to bolt... well... anything to on the main radio HU that I can see. :-/
My CB bolts up more-or-less where I want it to, that's far less of an issue to be honest. It being recessed a quarter-inch in comparison to my main radio I don't mind, especially since it has knobs and a mic-plug hanging off the front that stick out a good half-inch anyways.

Page showing good images of the chassis.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Note that metal 'sleeve' slides forward to lock into notches on the chassis itself, and those small holes on the side of the chassis aren't threaded that I can see. The unit came with no screws or bolts in any case. I'll see about pulling the unit and taking photos of the naked head unit and the sleeve seperately tommorow.

I hate those sleeve mounts. You are supposed to bend the appropriate tabs out to catch your mounting area. I don't think that any of the tabs are in the right place to catch on anything on the oem brackets.
You could probably drill the sleeve to match two of the OEM holes, and then use some mighty short bolts with super flat heads. Or, better yet, drill new holes through both and use rivets. |

don't.
take the sleeve out, and use the OEM mounting holes. do it. you'll see how the holes line up with the OEM bracket. You might be wondering, but if you use the OEM DIN mounts, you are not to use the plastic shroud that goes around the HU. which you probably would have to when using a metra kit. |

I had a similar metal sleeve and it was a huge pain in the butt to find a way to securely mount it to the metra kit. Mine didn't even have half the tabs yours has in those pics. So only one side of the unit was fit snugly. I had to do some "custom" adjustments to the sleeve and kit to finally get it secure.

Those metal sleeves are only for use in a dash that is a standard 1Din pocket, or with a plastic dash kit.
But many Japanese cars have a metal bracket that lets you mount the deck the most secure way: with screws. |

Nope. I'm in the Group Buy for the 180mm Dash Surround that CTScott is organizing. Gonna fix the issue the correct way.
