Just a quick question: I just drove 25 miles today after a great effort yesterday, and the first bar de-illuminated already. Was that a result of filling up too soon? I can't figure out why else that would happen?

The fuel bars are about as accurate as a magic 8 ball.

Something similar happened to me after I filled up after the first bar went off. Now sure why it does this.

The explanation is most likely that you did not fill the tank to the same level each time. The first time, you probably "under-filled" by a little, and that made your calculation fictitiously high. This would also explain why the bar disappeared so quickly this time. OK, the second fill-up was to a higher level than the first one, and that makes it look like you were getting fewer miles per gallon on the second tank.

It is impossible to fill the tank to EXACTLY the same level each time, and that is one of the reasons why gas mileage cannot be accurately determined on just one tank of gas. You need to average several consecutive tanks to get a true picture.

Yeah, the full tank reader gets all funky if you try topping off after only one bar has passed.
