Conventional engines use pistons that go up and down as were Rotary engines use a triangular wedge that rotates. My guess on the "hmmmm" would be due to the rotating mass as were the "boing" comes from the ups and downs. Think back to the first time you had sex, what happened? I'm sure it went "Boing".
