I bought my daughter a new 2001 Echo sedan (called a Platz in Japan) with the same 1.5L engine now used in Yarises here in the U.S. It was a very nice car to drive, economical and reliable. Aside from repairs for a couple of crashes and a big hailstorm, the only things it required before I traded it for a new Yaris this year were replacing tires, brakes and an alternator. The 2001 Vitz/Yaris was pretty much the same car with a hatchback body. The reason we're all driving Yarises now (3 in the family) is that we liked that Echo so well.
