I had an idiot in an SUV behave in the same manner. He caused an accident in which I could easily have been killed. Nothing would please me more than if I had the time to come to Montreal and explain to him in detail the stupidity of his actions .

Yeah Montreal has its share of ignorant drivers. In this case he should have looked in his mirror and seen the pack of cars coming up fast on his left and waited till they had passed to make his move,in the fraction of a second i had to make the decision to pass him or slam on the brakes i underestimated his ignorance and chose to pass thus avoiding a chain reaction accident behind me,guess i was caught in the proverbial "rock and a hard place"

I'm always afraid I'll be in an accident like this, my friend hates letting people pass, or in his words- hates letting people pass in the last minute before a lane ends (and to me it seems like thats EVERYONE) and he will hold his ground so long I start freaking out when the other car isn't slowing down either. Even if someone waits till the last min, and are being an ass about it I rather slow down than have both of us fighting over the same lane! But it sounded like you really had no choice with all the other cars behind you, that sucks.

It's better to yield to the ignorant jerk than to help precipitate a crash by insisting on your right-of-way.

In normal circumstances i would have had no problem letting the guy come over but in this case with the close proximity and speed differential and the traffic behind me most drivers would have made the decision to pass,i would have looked like a fool had i elected to slam on the brakes causing an accident behind me and in the end he chose not to make the lane change.as i said before a no win situation.I've been driving for 43 years and never had an accident i've made this decision to pass or not pass a vehicle in the slower lane with his turn signal on thousands of times, sometimes you pass sometimes you dont,my experience told me this was a passing scenario.

Jambo, I wasn't criticizing you. I was agreeing with the previous poster who was advocating not forcing situations because you're "right."

Right on! Especially if you ride.

Let the jerks have their accidents together, as long as they don't get their car parts on me. That's what I always say. (except with less polite words)

Man that's the biggest scrape on a small car I've ever seen in my life. In the States they would've suspended his trucker's license for a stunt like that. Could've been worse, happy to see it wasn't

I can only assume he was preparing for the merge into 1 lane at the top of the bridge as there was nothing in front of him but that merge was still 2 miles away.

Okay I'm going to take the Rvers side of this. If you were at the back wheels of his tow vehicle you were basically in a blind spot. If you were 4 to 5 car lengths behind him when he signaled why couldn't you wait?

Had a similar situation last summer. Du$$A$$ was more than 6 car lengths behind before I signaled and begun moving to the passing lane to avoid rear-ending traffic entering from the on ramp. DumbA$$ went to the shoulder to attempt to pass me even though I was in the passing lane completely. Du$$A$$ missed the oncoming bridge rail by about 4 inches and only because I braked hard to let him back over. I decided in a split second that seeing Du$$A$$ splattered wasn't worth the paperwork.

Dum$A$$ were clearly exceeding the posted speed limit. Best of all Dum$A$$ was pulled over by CHP 10 miles further down the road.

Now I admit that naming the other driver du$$A$$ is probably unfair. But how else do you describe someone who risk a 2,300 lbs vehicle against a 26,000lbs vehicle. The worst I would have seen was $4.000 to $5,000 in fiberglass damage paint and maybe a fromt end alignment on the Motorhome. I would have driven away from the scene in my toad. The other vehicle occupants would have been airlifted or DOA at the scene.

While the Yaris has sprinter speed and quick suspension you will lose every time against the brick wall. .....And as far as I can determine the Yaris vehicle registration gave me no more or less rights to the passing lane than the motorhome registration.

From the pic you posted I say you were lucky.

While i was behind him he was in the slow lane doing less than 50 kph with nothing in front of him,i was in the fast lane doing 70+kph, jamming my brakes on in this situation would have only caused a chain reaction accident behind me.Anyhoo got the police report and he was charged with making a dangerous lane change and failure to check his mirrors, seems i had the right of way as i was already in the passing lane and he hit me I didnt hit him,the police explained to me that even had i pulled up beside him and just matched speed with him he still wouldnt have had the right to run me off the road.
As for lucky, you are right he was quite prepared to run me into oncoming traffic
