Rear Window Defogger
This may not be news to the vast majority of folks here, but some other newbies like me who have not had their "Yarii" during any winter months might find this information useful. The rear window defogger must be turned off manually. I used mine this morning on the way to work, and I found it still on when I went to lunch today.
The lack of a timer on the defogger is very surprising to me. It is also surprising that it will stay on when the ignition is switched off. (There is a warning in the owners manual about draining the battery by leaving the defogger on when the car is shut off.) Gee, I guess a guy really ought to read his owners manual, huh? Tomster |

So I knew there was no timer, but I didn't know that it would continue warming even when the ignition is not on! Had my Yaris 2 years now and that is news to me. Thankfully I don't use my rear defogger very often here in SoCal...
Lol I am going to go consult my owner's manual on my lunch break |

Well, it's not like it's running when the keys are out. So, if the engine's running, you're good to leave it on. When your keys are out, you're good. The warning is just warning you about having the engine off with the keys in the 'On' position.

OK, the defogger is not "on" when the ignition is off. So, why the warning about battery drain?

Hahaha... over-warning at it's finest!!!
They mean that when you are sitting in your car, with like the radio on waiting for... well god knows what, if you have your defogger on then, it could drain the battery. But even then, I mean how many hours would that take?! I would bet it would be at least a few But that is what they mean by engine not running, but keys in the 'on' position. |

If the light is on, then the defogger is on. If the light is off, then the defogger is off.

Yeah, I noticed the defogger light was on when I went to lunch yesterday, but I had already started the car by then. Last night I tried turning off the ignition while the defogger was on, and the light went out. Tomster |

Haha, you guys scare me..
I just bought a Yaris and I'm picking it up today. It doesn't turn off when you turn off the car? WHAAAAT? haha, that is too far out there to believe.. Those defoggers pull down a LOT of power, they would drain a battery within minutes, there's just no way Toyota would screw up something so majorly.. But yea, the first few posts in this thread got me good.. |

Yeah i noticed that too. This the only car i have owned that dosnt have a timer. Even my POS ford escort i had the button would pop out after some time and would have to press it back in. Eventually it started popping out so much and i pressed it and it pushed into the dash and got lost so never worked again. But still it had a timer when the button was present.

I owned a '95 Saturn that also lacked a timer- inexcusable in my opinion.

I suspect it doesn't draw as much current as many do. Coming home in heavy snow yesterday, snow piled up on my back window with the rear defogger running continuously, and the front defroster running wide open with the temperature cranked all the way up. Takes a good while to clear light fogging in mild temperatures.

Kinda just seems like something that would piss me off when my back window wasn't defrosted 20 minutes down the road, or something that I would break like in yarissedan's old car. |

Honestly, I prefer the on/off version, I don't need the complexity of a timer on my rear defrost. I turn it on when the window is fogged up, and I turn it off when it's not. I think I can handle that much responsibility myself! |

^ at least you HAVE a front defroster. The model in Thailand lacks both front defroster AND heaters (though you will probably never need either here which is probably why they were omitted in the first place)

In the US, which options include the rear window defog/defrost?
If I am reading this right, you have to get the Power Package -- the Convenience Package doesn't include it. |
