I use clear tape to protect a few key sections on my rocker panels and fenders. I even use it by the hatch to prevent scratches where the bumper guard doesn't cover.

I got mine from http://www.soloperformance.com/ISC-S...lm_p_1488.html I have the two inch.

It works excellently, stays on for multiple car washes, but can still be removed. Only downside is dirt collects on the edges.

I installed it wet.(you'll need good sharp scissors, a spray bottle with water+a little car wash or other liquid soap, and maybe a rubber squeegee ).
Plan out where you want to put it and cut a strip.
Soak the area with your spray bottle.
Apply the tape.
As long as the tape is in a wet area you can move it around, and remove any air bubbles.
Make sure it stays on any round surfaces till its at least starts to dry(doesn't move as freely).
Repeat for the next piece.

Let it totally dry/sit overnight. I did it on a warm summer day, so I don't know how the cold might affect how long it should sit.

I can try to get some pictures, but I honestly don't know if you'll be able to see it on my camera.
