the mechanic said it was a nightmare repair requiring 2 techs to finish it.
it took 5 hrs instead of 2. no shit. they finished it 5 minutes before they closed.
When some of you 07 owners get to 150K, you are going to be doing this..
the VVTI was a stupid design idea for a basic no frills car like the older Yaris.

lol stupid design idea? You don't like the best of both worlds...decent power and excellent fuel economy from a 1.5L? If I remember right the job calls for 4-5 hours too.

They were doing it wrong - or they did not have the right tool for the job.

When we needed the unit replaced on the HP car, and did not have the Toyota SST for the job, we took it to the TMS garage. It took longer for the tech to pull the valve cover than to change the VVTi unit.
