Maybe it's just because I didn't grow up using this old stuff, but I'll stick to a digital setup. All the music I listen to (melodic death metal) sounds just fine on my modern equipment. Also, I don't care anything about bass (except for movies/video games). Don't even have a woofer in my car and don't plan on adding one.

Well. perhaps if you hear a properly balanced, mid to high powered sys you would change your mind. .

As far as digital, 99% of all recorded sound (speech/instruments, etc) has an anilog origin and no matter what you may think, it does loose something when converted to digital, at least to the knowlegable ear on an accurate sysyem.
Even with "digital" amps, the sound quality they send to speakers can vary from very good to pure crap

You don't care about bass?
That must mean you don't care about 99% of all recorded content. All music contans the full spectrum of frequencys...... including "bass"/ lower frequencys.
I wish you can hear "death metal" on a good balenced sys as that type of progam content can be the most demanding.

BTW... metal with no bass frequencys? You must be kidding!!!

Maybe, but I don't know anybody that has one anymore. I used to know a real audiophile but he died when I was young, and his kids unfortunately ravaged his system looking for stuff to sell. They ended up leaving it all there, but God only knows how to hook it back up. He had a whole wall full of boxes with levers on them in addition to the various players and whatnot, and I don't have the least idea how it was all connected.

Perhaps saying I don't care about bass was a bit strong, it was more aimed at the "all these young'ns wanna hear is boom boom boom" crowd. Yeah I like it to be there, but I don't need a subwoofer for it. The Alpine 6x9s I have in my car provide more than enough.

It's like I said in a previous post ...... most people don't care about good audio any more so, the market is flooded with junk.

However, good audio and "real audiophiles" are still around. You just have to look for it.
It amazes me that people can put together a complete computer sys but have no idea how to set up, wire a simple 2 channel sound sys which is much simpler.

BTW, I'm from a era berfore the net/i-phones, etc when most everyone wanted good audio. I remember spending over $1500 on a sys in the mid 1970s.
That would be about $5000 in today's money.
Now people get a cheap $50, crap 2.1 sys and think they have a great sound sys.

People have become so used to crap sound that that maufacture are happy to sell it to them.

BTW the "sub' woofer orginally got its name due to the fact that it reproduced frequencys that were below (sub) the threshold of human hearing. Those freq are felt rather than heard and add realisim to music, etc. It was not intended to (and did not) add a "boomy" sound
However, with the advent of the PC, there was only room for very tiny speakers on the computer desk. So, a third (poor quality) remote speaker was added in an attempt to reproduce what the cheap, tiny speakers could not and the "modern" sub was born........ complete with a "boomy" sound.

I'm sure I could appreciate something like a $5000 system, but I'm just not that into it. I could get a for real full auto Uzi for $5k, and I'd have a lot more fun with that lol. I have about 500 in my car's audio and about 700 in my home theatre system and they both do fine for me. I do enjoy when I get to work a show that has $50k in their audio setup, it makes running live metal shows and whatnot a blast when you can really rock the system and still get good clarity. I'm just not into it enough to spend a lot on my own stuff...

We've been in high end stereo shops and it's amazing how life like the sound is with multi $1,000 systems . If we only had the $ .

You don't need thousands, Hundreds perhaps.
With audio you reach the point of "diminishing returns" long before you run out of funds. It just depends on what you want to/can spend.

The point is you have to do a bit of research to sort out the garbage from the good.
As with any product, there are always companys lined up to sell junk to the ill imformed consumer at inflated prices.

I.setup high end audio video systems for a living. Been 10 years doing automation control and installation. Ive done multimillion dollar setups in museums, goverment and corporate companies. Recently finished a high end production studio and for the last 2 ive been doing high end audio video distribution and control in the residential market. Systems that are over 100k+... Speakers that cost $16000 just for 2 left and right...

And NOTHING beats the warm sounding tube amps... Period

99% of todays amps are garbage. If youre buying them at future shop or best buy then you are getting digital garbage. But solid state is cheap to make thats why the way of the tube will slowly die

When doing metal shows I vastly prefer the guitarist to have a tube amp. Those things sound awesome!

I have no idea what to ask for it. It's a complete setup (sans CD player) from 1985 or 1986. I should probalby look into it. I know it's a Beomaster 5000 series system.

BeoCord 5000 Cassete player (although it is not working)
BeoMaster 5000 Tuner (type 2323)
Master Control Panel 5000
Beovox S45 Speakers
All the literature and cords

The reciever has this hidden control pannel, but it is stuck in the open position.

It's actually my stepmom's, and I'm helping her sell it. It has been sitting in a closet for years; they just don't use it. I'd take it, but I really don't have a good place for it in our small house (and we've already got a stereo system).

I'm slowly piecing together a stereo computer audio system that will go roughly like so:

Some sort of digital -> analog audio interface for a clean source signal
Behringer DSP1124 ("feedback destroyer" doing EQ duties)
Some sort of crossover, I'd love a Behringer DCX2496 that has adjustable slopes and time alignment

To start off with, I'll have a HT receiver powering:
DIY speakers with: Tangband 4" FR's and Vifa 3/4" concentric ring radiator tweets

And a Behringer EP2500 powering:
DIY sub with: 15" Sound Solutions Audio Xcon... SQ sub with a 3" coil and over 2 inches of linear excursion
