If you purchase an OEM manufactured shift knob, it will come with adapters.
E.g. OBX shift knobs for Toyota/Scion will come with adapters

Other aftermarket shift knobs do not come with adapters, but are fastened by using three screws on the bottom of the shift knob, which "grip" the stick shift. This is how MOMO shift knobs are secured to the stick shift.

I believe that is how Sparco works also. Is it worse than using adapters or is it about the same in durability standards (three screws compared to adapters)?

I feel that adapters, or better yet, shift knobs with the correct thread pattern (ie. directly screwed on without the need of an adapter), are a better fit than the universal fasteners which use the three screws.

Adapters compensate for the incorrect thread patterns as they will thread directly onto the shift knob on the inside, while securing the shift knob to the stick shift. Overall this makes for a good fit too.

In the past I found that my MOMO shift knob became loose after a few months usage and would require some tightening/retorquing of the screws.

OBX IS GARBAGE and i don't think anyone has ever used those adapters for a toyota/scion yet.......

Yeah, OBX isn't exactly fancy stuff and it is sort of ricey. I was looking at direct fit/screw on knobs and the only options for Toyota are TRD, OBX, and the 'sport' knobs that are optional for each vehicle.

From what I understand, the OBX (or OEM in general) knobs are threaded for manual transmissions on the shift knob itself, and the adapters/inserts are included in the event that the knob is to be installed on an automatic transmission.

This knob that I bought, made for the Scion tC, is made by "autobahn kraftwerks" and is called Speed Star Mesh (see picture below).

It screwed on directly to the the manual stick shift of my Yaris without the need for an adapter.
