I don't think anyone should wait that long for the first one. But supposedly nowadays all the traditional engine breaking in is done at the factory.

That is a small part of it. The oil companies have been lining the manufacturer's pockets for decades. Perhaps you have heard of the engine created over 50 years ago that was able to get much more than what the Prius does today back then? The information and evidence was bought by a major player in the industry because at the time oil was dirt cheap as it was along with plenty of other reasons that they found to be a threat.

If you take a look at the technology today in oil refinement or at least what is being advertised is that the processes and additives are strengthening the end product to the point that it can last longer. Also of course engine efficiency has been increased dramatically.

Sure, I am championing AMSOIL, but also I have run Mobil 1, Royal Purple, Penzoil Synth, etc mainly because it has been proven to not only give you longer drain intervals, but better pour temps and lower engine temps/wear patterns. I personally didn't hesitate in the least to go the 5k that Toyota's blend called for on the initial change.

As previously stated you can use what you wish for lubricants. If the engine fails and the manufacturer wants to not warranty it then they have to do all of the homework to prove that what you placed in your crankcase was directly related to the failure of the parts.
