At 55K they may have actually replaced the belt to cure the squeal and a new belt will stretch a bit and needs to be re-tightened after a short period of use. Putting soap on the belt is not a good idea, as it lubricates the belt making it slip even more, and a slipping belt will glaze the contact surface (which is where the surface gets hot enough to harden the surface, where it then completely loses its gripping ability).

The rattle in the intake was probably nut shells from mice nesting in there.

Is this someting to worry about in my climate? (I know there are some mice or rats in the neighborhood)
