How about eliminating tax on gasoline/diesel, and adding a registration tax based on miles driven per year x weight of vehicle (heavier vehicles doing more damage to roads).

Because it's an invasion of privacy (IMO). It's none of the federal government's business how many miles I drive per year. it's only my insurance company's businessI I don't think it is the State of Texas' business how many miles I drive per year either, but if I don't like it I can always move to another state that doesn't have state inspections. If I had to provide that information to the federal government......then I obviously could not avoid the 'mileage ID' by moving to another state.
