The depth of the wheel's lug nut holes doesn't matter. The key is to look at the shape of the surface that the lug nut touches and make sure that it is the same shape as the lug. So, if it has a taper (and the angle of the tapers match), you would use tapered lugnuts (which is what the OEM ones for the steelies are). Some alloy rims have really tight holes, where you can't fit the stock lugs with a wrench into. In that case you have to use smaller outer dimension lugs.
