I believe currently Toyota uses BMW and AVM for their current engines, but are going to be switching to Mazda pretty soon at least for the sub 2l category. It completely makes sense to me as to why Toyota doesn't develop diesel engines, since only 1 market uses them and they can get a much better return on their investment by using hybrid drivetrains.
But I your likely correct, DI and valvematic engines will probably start popping up soon along with newer hybrid engines for the more popular vehicles.
