In my distant past I worked in a transmission shop. Changing the fluid and filter were routine maintenance, and most people waited too long. Need/frequency depends on several factors; I can tell by the color and smell of the fluid when it's time for mine.
I just changed my 2007 hatchback's at 54,200 miles, and it was definitely time. Required about 3.5 quarts of Toyota ATF WS. I used a Fram FT1220 filter kit that was less than $14 from RockAuto.com, plus shipping. Looked just like the original. As mentioned, the filter _does_ have filter-media, and is not just a screen. I like the provided drain plug in the pan. That will encourage me to replace a few quarts every year or two, but I likely won't change the filter again for many years. |
