Damn, what a change. They were probably the same in speed, but going from a Benz to an Echo? Shudder.

Not really the 240D is 58 hp! Its suspension especially the front end is capable out outstanding handling however. It goes around corners like stink! Miata like you might say. But theres nothing behind it pushing it.

Owning a MB is a social shot across the bow of many people. My wife was at a family reunion with her back to a group or women and heard this conversation:

"I heard the Kneisl's got a Mercedes Benz. It was $4000."

"That was just the down payment, dearie."

When I brought it home my neighbor came over to look it at.

The next day he went out and bought a Lincoln Town Car.

As much as I loved the 204D I liked the ECHO just as much...

Ha! I know. Even owning an old (well, 8 years at the time, so no older than my Yaris now. damn.) E21 BMW 3 series pissed so many people off. Wasn't fast, topped out at 100 mph, wasn't very luxurious (but damn if it didn't have power mirrors) but it sure was fun.

I love this post. Cracks me up. A long time friend of the family buys a new Lincoln every year, but as far as I know still has a '63 Impala convertible that he bought new and keeps in pristine condition. One of the last times I saw a particular family member, I asked him "Does Lynn still have that '63 Impala convertible" (yes, a man named Lynn). My family member said "Oh no, he's very successful" . It would seem to me that a guy with plenty of money wouldn't get rid of an old pristine car that he was very fond of unless his wife didn't want him to keep the car. What made my relative's comment more perplexing was that said relative bought a '72 250C new and kept that for many years until he got rear ended and, much to his chagrin, the insurance company totaled the 250C. I guess my relative thinks an old Benz is worth keeping, but not a Chevy. The Impala fan is now 84, and I have a hunch he still has that convertible.

Did your neighbor think you were being unpatriotic re buying a German car ? My grandfather thought buying a foriegn car was unpatriotic. He drove only Lincolns and Cadillacs.

My grandmother called my grandfather either by his first name or "dearie"

No not at all. Havnt seen that kind of opinion since I read "How To Keep Your VW AliveFor The Compleat Idiot" in the 60s and my father saw it. He was strictly a Chevy man and couldnt understand anyone not buying American. HE hated foreign cars! I overheard a conversation between him and mom about my love for VWs. They wondered if they were raiseing a degenerate!

But (after gas prices went up in 73) walking home from college spring break I saw a VW in our driveway. "WHo do we know who drives a VW" I wondered. "And how would they DARE to park it in my fathers driveway!"

It turned out it had a blown engine and he bought it for $300 for me to fix!

Erm...something like that. The previous year my best friend and I fell in love with the same woman. I lost he won. I got accepted to college after my jr year in high school so I went to get the heck out of town! By the time he bought the VW I was more or less over it.

But Im pretty sure that's why he bought it to cheer me up!

He DID NOT like foreign cars but for that he could make an exception!
