I have to agree that the Echo was a horrible design when it comes to aesthetics. When I considered replacing my Tercel in the early 2000s I actually chose to forego picking up anything and kept the Tercel because I wanted a basic and cheap A-B car yet couldn't get passed how I felt driving an Echo. Things happen for a reason tho. After 10 worry free and enjoyable years with my Tercel I sold it to a gent for 2k and bought my Yaris sedan.

No doubt the Echo is one of the most awkwardly designed cars of the modern era that was sold in the US. I stress US because we've all seen how hideous many of the cars are in foreign markets, especially 3rd world countries. Seems they are blind to design. I don't know how the Echo's design was signed off on for sale in N America. No other Toyota had shared any similarity either.

![]() I liked the looks of the ECHO at first sight. I had test driven a Honda Civic, certain I was going to buy it. It had a 1.7 liter engine and was about as big as my brothers 93 Accord. FAIL! I knew it was PERFECT! ![]() Once you get past the "I use my car to impress others" mistake the ECHO looks a lot better...

) , the 4-door ECHO is much better looking than the 2-door ECHO, and the ECHO hatch is much better looking than the other trim levels.
