1zz throttle body +what intake??
i currently have the tooter manifold spacer on my car and have just picked up a 1zz throttle body to install. not thinking about it being bigger i went to install it and realized the stock intake tube to the air box doesnt fit. My question is what intake are you guys with 1zz throttle bodies running? I like the AFE but im not sure how it will fit seeing as i have the manifold spacer pushing everything out.

There have been several folka that have done the 1zz TB. Have you done a search for both keywords 1zz and intake? This will probably assist you greatly.

I did the 1ZZ TB, good throttle response improvement but theirs still a lot of restrictions if only the TB is done. Just so you know, the difference in size and air volume between the 1NZ and 1ZZ is approx. 30%. Replacing the TB only, your restricted by the intake manifold and air intake.

Turn the stock intake tube around and use some type of lubricant as it will be a snug fit.

And you still end up with a 30% restriction.

You can port match the intake manifold to the 1zz TB. Thats was done to the one i got.
And i also have the Tooter spacer. I can tell you with the Spacer/Manifold port matched to the 1zz TB and AFE intake, i have no oscillations and high rpm at cold start promptly drops to operating idle rpm quickly.

By the way, with just the 1ZZ TB not port matched at all and the stock air box, I got oscillation for five minutes the first day then that was it. |

I figured that with the longer intake runners with the tooter spacer, it balances out the extra air coming in. And with the Weapon R exhaust header and catless Nitto midpipe to DC sport exhaust; air going out should flow better.
Yes i know i could go with thicker exhaust pipes but save that for someday i go boost which will never come LOL.

thanks for all the help guys. i did plan on port matching and getting an aftermarket air intake i was only concerned with fitment on the throttle body and fitment of the heat shield on the afe due to the manifold spacer. The spacer is only for now i plan on doing a manifold but at the time i couldn't find one for sale.
ezhacker1 - did the coupler supplied with the afe intake match up to throttle body? Also is the diameter of the intake pipe smaller than the 1zz throttle body or same size? |

I don't think it's all that difficult to make your own intake manifold that will match the 1zz throttle body. It's all just a matter of doing a bit of welding.
Hit the wreckers and try to find a 1zz-fe manifold from a 1998-2002 corolla (this will require an aditional addaptor) or an aluminum celica manifold (don't remember which years) along with an aluminum 1nz-fxe manifold from a 2004-2009 prius. Then saw off both intake port flanges and swap them. Now you have a 1zz intake manifold that bolts up directly to the engine. You can even use it in conjunction with the spacer you have.

I've been using the aem cai with my 1ZZ tb. No oscillating issues after 5 years.

so the 1zz-fe manifold from a 1998-2002 corolla will work as long as you mate it with the flange from aluminum 1nz-fxe manifold from a 2004-2009 prius?

That's the idea. An important thing to note is that the runners from the corolla manifold don't align 100% with the ports on the flange of the prius aluminum manifold, so if you end up doing things this way, you'll need to carefully bend the tubes a bit to get everything to lign up.

If you've got access to some basic metalworking tools, you can make your own flange. You need a knee mill (Bridgeport) and a die grinder at a minimum.
I helped Tooter develop his 1ZZ kit, and posted a PDF of the mechanical drawing for the flange in the thread (somewhere). There's really two options that don't involve bending: cut the tubes loose from both ends and make a new plenum (air box) on the intake side, or make the flange from the drawings I posted. |

Sorry to bring back an old thread, but I'm considering do this for my car. Does anyone have an update on this? Anyone able to weld the Corolla and Prius intake manifold together?
Thanks! |
