Why would Toyota rebadge a Mazda? Toyota has virtually dozens of JDM models that could have been introduced as a new Scion.

Because Toyota now sees cars like the Yaris, Tercel, etc as low budget, thus low money makers. They are after the big profits now. They are forgetting that the small cars put them on the map. Toyota could care less about the small car market now. They're in the big leagues.
