Toyota calls for 5W30 so just stick with that in the future. Also IMHO using synthetic oil is a generally a waste of money unless you're using the car in extreme operating conditions like -40 winter conditions, 100% city stop and go driving, very long service intervals or racing.

Toyota released a TSB a couple years ago to move to 20 weight so that is what many have done.

Mobil1 filter...and whatever the people that built the car recommend for oil...more critical under warranty. Yea you can go well beyond the scheduled oil changes with the super duper stuff....but you will void the warranty.

That is actually false. No manufacturer to this day has had the stones to attempt to publicly say that. If they do they will be in court the next day. As long as the lubricants meet SAE certification requirements then it cannot void a warranty. It would have to be explicitly proven that the lubricant was the cause of failure without a shadow of a doubt.

Pretty bold statement and legal advice regarding warranty contracts. My particular warranty has nothing to do with the manufacturer. It is through an independent company that the dealer arranged. I'll stick with what is specified for my car.....it's not going to break my bank account.

Looking at the owners manual even for the latest 2016 it's still indicating 5W30.

I don't doubt that Toyota is moving to 20 weight as the industry trend has been to 5W20, and now 0W20 motor oils. But I don't think the TSB applies to the 1NZ-FE engine which is one of the oldest designed engines you can buy in a current Toyota and is in the process of being replaced by the NR engine family.

Yes, I checked with the local Toyota dealers here in Southern California... and all of them are using 0-20.
