you are fine with +38 with the 215/50's on a 6.5 wide wheel
the 215's would be my choice for the wider footprint and better handling I was running 225/50R15 on 15x7's with a +38 I was not lowered but she did not rub at all, and that is a much larger tire if not go with the safer 205/55R15, not sure what you are talkin about that size being hard to come by, but that is the most common of all the sizes mentioned and the cheepest.... the 205/55R15 would be the happy in between
