I don't know why two posters above claimed that the Rabbit is turbocharged (it isn't) and a sports car (it isn't). The Rabbit/Golf is an economy car with a comparatively thirsty economy engine. The 2.5L is unusual sounding, although relatively maintenance free in relation to the Mark IV generation Golf/Jetta that preceded it. I had a Mark III Jetta and it was a TERRIBLE car. Always had cooling system problems. Always had a lousy shifting/feeling transmission. Always had a check engine light on. Always sucked too much gas for the performance it put out.

If we're talking Mark VI GTI, that might be a different matter. But I got into the Yaris immediately after my Volkswagen and unless somebody else is paying parts and maintenance, I won't go back to VW.

Yeah my bad. No turbo. I was thinking of the GTI.

Technically the GTI is a turbocharged rabbit, but I meant the last version of the N/A Rabbit. If there were no issues I'd say the rabbit is better. In all actuality it is a beautiful car for people who want to pay for it. I chose the yaris for price and the fact that it can be modded to be just as fast & nimble for less. Also it's reliable, even when having the crap beaten out of it, as most of us have proven.

1] There are many more differences between the Golf and GTI than just the turbocharged mill. Volkswagen doesn't consider it an option package, such as a base Yaris vs a Yaris RS. 2] I didn't find the Golf to be beautiful. That's one of the last words I'd use for it. o_O

I found it to be quick, quiet and fairly large for a compact. The inside, although extensively bathed in quality materials, is dark and somber and boringly designed to the point of theatrical tear shedding. There is no correlation between the Mark V/VI Golf and what made the original Mark I and II Golfs so special.

But if you were going to trade up and you like the Rabbit, more power to ya. If not...I sorta wonder what the point of this thread even was.

The 2010 and newer are called Golf once again-Rabbit just didn't float like it once did as cute and affordable-I mean you're pushing 20K for a base model. I've owned a VW Corrado back in the 90's from new-electrical gremlins-and from what I read and see not a whole lot has changed. But the biggest complaint I had outside of ownership cost was the odd distortion at the base of the windshield-it varied from car to car, but the smearing of the road surface at the dash edge drove me crazy during the test drive and I had no problem handing the keys back and saying it's not for me.

Maybe now that the Uber-Rabbit is dead in a few years they'll bring back a TRUE Rabbit: a minimalist microhatch car with a choice of either deisel, hybrid or all-electric.

there is no comparing a rabbit and a yaris, If I had to pick which car to drive it would be the rabbit hands down. the rabbit is better in every category except for fuel mileage and reliability I must say though the 2.5 jetta's and rabbits are very reliable. the vw is just a better car it drives better the engine doesnt sound like a weed eater and door doesnt sound like a tin can when you close it. volkswagen makes a better built car than toyota plain and simple toyota will win in reliablity but volkswagen will win in every other category. I own both and have worked on both. the vw will also hold its value way better.

what do you think all the negative press and numerous recalls have done to the value of your toyota? go price out an 03 tdi golf with low miles I bet you it will be worth almost as much as a new yaris. the yaris is a cheap bare bones car and always will be. the yaris is cheap and reliable thats all it has going for it.

A new 2010 Yaris vs a seven year old Golf. Hm...let me think about this.

Volkswagen doesn't sell a car in America comparable to the Yaris, so comparing solely to the Yaris is nonsense. You can't take a car that bases at $12K and change and compare it to a car that starts at nearly $17K. But as a whole, Toyota's resale crushes Volkswagen's.

Like I said earlier, if we're talking MKVI GTI in red with a 6MT, I may glance with perked up ears. But VW still is not mentionable in the same breath as Toyota and Honda.

I didn't know vw built such reliable and durable vehicles. I've got only about 8 vw customers [Passat, Jetta, Beetle] ...all the Beetles have broken door handles and center consoles hanging by about one screw, 2 out of 3 Passats blew their motors, Jetta blew its motor, Passat is infested with electrical gremlins, they've all got some sort of broken plastics galore [visors, vents, splash shields, engine covers, air inlets, and most are leaking 1 or more fluids.

I'd say the more reliable car is the better built car. VWs are fun to drive, but I'd sure hate to pay the price of admission to own one that costs a lot more to purchase, and a lot more to maintain.

and I can point out plenty of camrys with oil leaking v6's bad knock sensors and do you remember the HEAD GASKET recall they had on the v6 tacoma's. every car line builds lemons toyota has plenty of problems trust me they are in the spot light every week for recalls. the reason the yaris doenst break is because there is nothing to it there are no options, its basicly a roller skate with an engine. I agree with you though the old passat is a turd any volkswagen 2005 and up are great cars.

VW's fit and finsish is much better than Toyota's. If I could afford one, I would have a 2010 GTi in my garage now and ditch my Yaris.

I'm just trying to point out the extremely high percentages of a very low volume car line [in my shop] and how they just seem to fall apart so readily. Maybe the '05 and up VW line build plastics, and pretty much everything else, that hold up better now, or at least as well as its competitors.

If I bought a VW it'd be a new TDI 3-door Golf.

Out of curiosity, i tried to figure depreciations of both models.

I went to edmunds.com and got trade in values of base/manual 2 door 2007 Rabbit and Yaris, with no options and 40000 miles, both in clean condition.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find '07 MSRP of both models, so I used '09 prices, figureing they probably hadn't changed much.

The rabbit retained 47% of its MSRP
The Yaris retained 55%

not entirely accurate, but i guess fairly close for what it's worth.
