There is no stock rear sway bar.

I sure hope that its a bit more involved than the sway bar for the Scion since that sure doesn't look like it is going to do anything. Its a bar that is attached to a solid rear beam axle and nothing else. Seems like it would be like trying to stiffen a pencil by gluing a tooth pick to it. You would think it would be mounted to the chassis at some point.

Haha, give him a break It's not his fault Toyota cheaped out THAT MUCH and didnt' even install a rear sway bar on these cars! I wouldn't believe they still made cars without rear sway bars if I didn't own one myself

I had a Progress rear sway on my xB and it had no mounting points. It free floated and was attached to the underside of the swing arms. When I looked at my Yaris hatch on the rack it looked a lot smaller up in there so I'm not sure if there is enough clearance for a "free floating" sway.

BTW, the Progress worked miracles for the xB. Unless you just want to spend money, it's the only suspension mod you need.

Go ahead and put me on the list.

Is the progress rear sway bar going to be similar to the one in this article? sway bar for prius.

After reading that article, I understand how the bar would reduce understeer, which is good (to a point). But how would it work in connection with (or instead of) an front upper strut bar?

Thanks!

Yes, the price includes shipping! We may even be able to reduce the price a little more if we can get more than 25 people signed up. It includes instructions with pictures, and I will be posting instructions on the forums once I install mine.

That's the point! There is no stock sway bar This really will be as simple as just a few bolts, but it really does make a big difference.

It actually is very similar to the Scion design. If you study some other cars with similar trailing arm rear suspensions you'll find that this is the most effective way of controlling roll in the rear. The trailing arm is designed with a certain amount of flex/twist from the factory and this arm will help reduce the flex and minimize the roll allowing the car to corner flatter with less deflection in the rear end. Even the stock VW/Scion sway bars are mounted the same way.

That's a very good article, thanks for sharing! Our bars will be very similar to that one (except they'll bend backwards towards the spring/shock like the picture above). I actually had one of the straight style ones on my VW before and it works well, but requires you to drill holes in the trailing arm which would complicate the install for most. I think the way Progress do it is better for most do it yourself installers. I can't believe they charge $285 for that bar!

The front strut bar, rear strut bar (upper), and other chassis reinforcement bars can help improve your handling also by reducing chassis twist. Most of the ones that go on the front, will theoretically increase chances of understeer and bars that go on the back should increase oversteer. In my oppinion, the rear sway bar is by far the most effective one from the above mentioned bars.

largeorangefont is now confirmed, let me know if anyone else wants in!

dumb question, but how exactly does the rear sway bar work when it is attached to the rear dead axle only?

Not dumb at all, the rear trailing arm is designed to twist, by adding the bar you are stiffening the arm and reducing the excess twist which will help minimize body roll and will help transfer weight to the outside wheel in turns.

Progress is shooting themselves in the foot. They should have been bright enough to make a batch for enthusiastic fans who want a bar from them--hell, we're the ones who yack it up all over the place!

Oh well, keep me on the list for now but I gotta take a look at the TRD bar now.

Well, I waited as long as I could. Just had a TRD rear sway installed this morning. Looks like I come of the list.
