seems pretty substantial... nice case and everything...is it really a whole chip?

That is a riot! Where did they have you connect said "chip"?

It's quite sad as well that they don't even solder the resistor to the wire - just twist the leads around the wire.

It's called wire wrapping and it's actually a technique that's used often in smaller electronics...

20 cent resister , $19.80 for the box and a bit of wire , sounds like a bargin ,
so how many are you going to hold in stock , for the honda guy's of course.

that 33k resistor is actually only 8 cents

Not just any resistor, Its a 33k ohm 1/2 watts resistor!
Cost about $0.01 each from digikey.
