The Anticipation Kills!
Guess what I found at the shop today...just waiting for install...
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() We've got two of these going on... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ...On the 15th comes the two Exile Xi 800.4's and the one Exile Xi 1500.1, Got headroom? I'll be finishing up the deadening for the rear doors and the trunk on thursday. I'm working the idea of having the two 15"s sealed...facing the trunk, having a plexi sheet in front of the woofers for show. Gotta etch and light it up after all, it gives the shop some advertising space. I need to "vent" the pressure into the cabin. I don't want to cut up the rear deck (unibody, hello!) so I'm considering venting the sound through the top of the enclosure in through the fold down seats... Hmmm...thinking...

Still think you should get your hands on an 2000-2004 vintage RE XXX or Adire Brahma... low notes with very low distortion... even at high volumes, but I got love for ID as well.... have fun with the install. (GO IB!!!)

We were considering ditching the two ID 15s for two IDMAX 12s. That thought just scares the $hit out of me. I figured that the cone area of two 15s only playing 60 Hz down in two sealed enclosures that "vent" into the cabin of the car and having right around 1500 Watts available (if ever needed) was just fine for me. All I need is to hit 130 dB, my current plan will easily do that and give me the low extension I want from 15s.
That being said, the skinny is that ID is coming out with an IDMAX 15, which in that case I MAY consider a switch. Also ID is coming with new amplifiers at CES in January. We've been planning and scheming for so long with Exile amplifiers, yet given the pricing that the shop is giving me I will probably be going with the new ID Q amplifiers when they come out in January. Even with the possibility of the shop picking up the Electromedia line (Hertz/Audison)...and even then, I'm fine with ID's amplifier product and it's pricing. I don't see any changes with what I have now (save for a copper phase plug in the tweeter). So, next month comes the amplifiers, "improved" tweeters, and an Autopage RS-1100 alarm. I'll also be putting up pictures of the continuing deadening of the Yaris after it happens today. I'll also slap some pics of my wife's Christmas present up here...The enclosure for the ID 8, Exile components, and the Powerbass ASA 700.5 in her Tacoma. All this while on leave. I keep myself busy! Here's just a couple pics of the Tacoma doors...I was gasketing the baffles and the speakers on the bottom yesterday. The mids were "farting" like crazy...I'll have pics of the mids in today, I'll just pop off the panel and snap a couple: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I'm going to move the amplifier a little bit forward. We bridged the channels down to two. It gives some "oomph" to the component set. Man! I suppose I need to take pics of the reQ and the crossovers too...

Okay...Thanks to an '85 Toyota 4x4 that had a chevy V-6, a push button ignition, F'd up wiring (I'll leave it at that)...whose owner wanted a remote start alarm with all the bells and whistles, I have not been able to touch the Yaris as of yet.
I did manage to simplify and finish my wife's Christmas present...more pictures abound: Got wood? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Yeah...enough pics of the enclosure? This little ID 8 is an amazing woofer. We decided to keep the enclosure a strict exercise of the KISS principle. I'm sure this thing could double as a home audio woofer too! We found that when put under power that the terminal cup was leaking air. The solution? Black hot glue sealing the inside of any possible exit point for air. It seemed to work well. This shape is a very home audio based application. It was made to sit level with the back "seat" of my wife's truck AND to be removable when she needs. The sound is impressive considering the size of the woofer. We made it down firing for as much dispersion and protection as possible. It was a quick couple hours of work that so far is yielding some nice results. The only real thing we didn't do that we had planned was to round the edges. I had two table routers that were less than ten feet from me and I simple was so excited to hear the enclosure, I forgot about the edge finish until right as I was setting the first side down on the carpeting. DAMN! C'est la vie. Note, I did say that I'd include pics of the mid on the doors...I have them on the camera memory. I forgot that I had my memory card in the shop's computer showing them (the shop owners) pics from Iraq and test firing the suppressed SCAR L, SCAR H, and the M134 mini. SOOOOO...the pics of the mids are on the camera itself and I have NO idea where a cord is to hook up to this damned computer. I'll have to take more pics with a card in the camera sometime. Now, continuing with the pics: ![]() ![]() ![]() Rear of the console: ![]() ![]() And of course I also didn't take pics of the enclosure actually IN the truck... *sigh* ... I'm just off my game today! I'll finish the pictures probably on Friday. That's when I'll be in the shop to do some more deadening on the Yaris. Thoughts?

Speaking of foam...here in a couple hours I'll be going back in to the shop to do the rear doors and the trunk. I asked the wife where the box of foam was. She looked at me, gave me a sheepish grin and said it's buried in storage.
Dammit! I have never even seen the storage unit yet and the wife doesn't even REALLY know what the box looks like. I knew...I just knew I should have put that box in the back of the Yaris. *sigh* Well, this means I'll have to try out Stinger's foam. It looks more sub substantial. It's only enough for the two doors. The shop owner has another 12 square of Dynamat's foam as well. We'll see how the Stinger foam works...the car is already quiet. Frago for you peeps; I'll be coming with more deadening pics later today. Woot! After this, it’s all about the roof when we do the tweeters in April/May. The sub enclosure is going to be fun too. I've been jiving with Eric Stevens and Matt Borgart from Image Dynamics about the sub enclosure intricacies...it's going to turn out well.

*sigh*
Here's the rear doors: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Of course I did the other door as well. It of course went a few minutes faster. All I have to say is that Dynamat's 1/2" Dynaliner is the $hit! I got it at a good price (for Dynamat)...These rears are DEAD! Close the coffin, bury them 6' down. They're dead quiet. Here's the trunk: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Okay...there is a reason that there is no foam or more than one layer in the trunk. The subwoofer enclosure still needs to be made; the woofers will also "vent" the pressure into the cabin versus the trunk. I could show you the trunk lid...as we know most of the rattling from people's systems works through that license plate (the trunk lid). I've got that lid nailed down. I have so much into it that it looks almost quilted under the stock lid cover. As you can see just from these pictures, I don't mess around. The only thing left to do at this point is to drop the headliner. That will happen in April/May when we finally do the speaker placement and the big part of the build on this Yaris. By that time the new Autopage RS 1100 OLED responder will be installed in the car while I'm back in Iraq. We'll also have the ID amplifiers purchased and the NEW Hybrid Audio L1 Pro SE tweeters in our hands. The L1 Pros are awesome tweeters, I just need to have the best I can find for this vehicle. The only other things on this car will be the improved grounds (techflex and heat shrink on 1/0 gauge cable), three "fast" batteries (two in series under the hood and one by the Q 1200.1), window tint, and stock Toyota 15" alloy rims. You guys are going to love the A-pillars, the 4.6" midranges in kicks, the 8.5" mid basses in the front doors, the amp rack...and that sub enclosure...man that is going to be sweet. Thoughts?

I would love to hear what your car sounds like after it's complete!
All that sound deadening must do wonders to a car like the Yaris. |

It is really interesting actually. The noise floor is lowered quite a bit, especially with the foam. I knew when I went into this that the mat itself wouldn't be enough. Using the mat AND foam is really like a fighter throwing punches in bunches versus just jabbing.
I've got a video that demonstrates the difference between a bare panel and a fully deadened panel. I'm wondering if I can post it on here. I'll insert the link at least... What I've been doing is simply laying down the base for the install. I was so "inspired" to move last year by a fellow YW member who insinuated that I was a completely uneducated consumer that didn't know a thing about car audio. This turned out to be the wrong thing to say to me. I've taken that motivation and it has turned into an awesome project. Most outsiders, like one person yesterday at the shop say "what the!? Why even bother? It's a Yaris!" Yeah, so? You drive a Honda Civic with a ghetto setup in it, why bother? The collaboration from Team Hybrids, Scott from Hybrid Audio Technologies, Eric Stevens and Matt Borgart from Image Dynamics, all the local reps who have their collective lines being represented in this car, Dave who is my fellow "silent investor" for the shop, and the shop itself are really going to be putting a very high level install into this little sub compact sedan. The plans are finalized, as of the middle of January all the equipment will be purchased...we're just waiting for me to finish my deployment to Iraq (which helps fund this little project) to start on the main part of the install. The end of April will see a big infusion of money thanks to a re-enlistment bonus. Projecting what this has cost JUST in equipment costs? Oh, at MAP pricing I'd estimate this...oh wow! Around $7500 maybe $8000. Of course I didn't pay that much, hence my always telling everyone to make friends with an experienced installer. It WILL save you time, money, and headaches. I'd also say by the time this whole project ends, to put at least that amount ($8K) into install costs. I have spent a lot of time planning, and executing just the sound deadening itself. Having worked with the shop owner before at another high end stereo shop, I know that the labor doesn't come cheap. I also know what is involved with installing a system like this. I am projecting that in late April or early May when I'm back that the first part of the install will be a combination of the signal path. The Carrozzeria will be installed, seamlessly, into the vehicle. I'll be making my own RCAs. We'll setup the woofer enclosure and the amp rack. That will allow us to then do the install on the three way components. I'd say that there will be a few weeks of testing and setup prep for the front end speakers, then maybe a week of actual fab. Then the woofer enclosure will happen. The alarm will already be installed...it will probably happen in mid February when I'm in Iraq. Man! There is SO much to think about here. It's not like just slapping in a pair of speakers and a deck and going cruising! Thank the lord I have short hair already! I'd be pulling it out otherwise.

Next time you get a chance, ask Scott from Hybrid why there's "bad blood" between Morel and him.

Why the Tacoma? *meh* I dunno. Just something fun. I'll take it off if it really doesn't need to be here.
The speaker install is going to happen in April when I get back from this deployment. You guys are going to love what we have in store for this little Yaris. I think I've asked Scott about the Morel issue before. Something to do with the management of the company...I'll ask again... Oh hey, question for you guys... I've got snippets of the car being deadened all over these forums. Would it be appropriate to get it all together in one post so people can refer to it for their projects? Thoughts?
