CHECK ENGINE !!! Dealer Blames (Oil Control Valve)
Hi All,
I've had an issue with my 2008 Yaris Sedan for a while now and the dealership hasn't been able to determine the issue. CHRONOLOGICAL PROCESS OF ISSUE: 1. Check Engine Turns On 2. Transmission Disengages (or it seems). 3. The Engine sounds like it's accelerating. 4. Gas pedal stops responding. 5. Your heart almost stops from the scare. 6. You have to pull over and restart the car for it to start working again. The dealership is trying to tell me that the issue is caused by the (CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY). This part is depicted in page LU-14 of the PDF on the following link: http://www.etimago.com/yaris/repairm...ubrication.pdf The dealership is not totally sure that this is the issue; however, they want me to pay $500 to replace it. This is after replacing the carpet and gas pedal since they originally thought it had a sticky pedal issue (even though the Yaris wasn't part of the recall). Could someone please shed some light on this matter. I don't plan to reconstruct the whole car to find the issue. At the dealership's labor rate it may be cheaper to buy a new brand new Yaris. |

OCV brand new is about 95.00 and takes a whole 15 minutes to install(on my 07 anyways)...
I had a CEL and a P0011 code so I went ahead and bought a new OCV from Toyota....CEL is gone. I was getting a random high rev when I would shift into N(manual trans). I assumed it was the CPU playing with the timing since the OCV was going out, but that was just a guess. |

The diagnostics code is P0011. I'm going to replace the Oil Control Valve (OCV) (Manufacturer Part #: 1533021011) since it's only $75 dollars and go from there. The part is available at: http://www.toyotapartszone.com/oem/t...330-21011.html
Thank you both for the good info. I'll make sure to post my results in order to save other people some time with this issue. It has really been a pain in the rear. It's 5 O'clock! Thanks Again! |

It's a piece of cake fix. Disconnect neg battery cable. Drop the alternator bracket and unbolt/unplug the old OCV, you'll need to give it a little twist then it will slide right out. New one goes in the same way, bolt up, re bolt alternator bracket....done. With that code I believe there was only two real options, OCV or camshaft gear...thank goodness it wasn't camshaft gear. |

This a common Toyota issue with most models. The oil control valve gets clogged with sludge due to lack of maintenance.

holy old thread batman!
as far as I know, they wouldn't have changed this between model years as the engine is the same. If I recall, I will check at work tomorrow (I don't have parts cataloging at home) |

Is this a real common failure part that's worth ordering and tucking away for a rainy day? Can they be removed and cleaned?

Not really, it doesn't normally effect the engine to the point that you couldn't drive it. I drove on that CEL for over a month without noticing any difference, just the lack of the CEL after I replaced it.

Guys do you have a way of testing the oil control valve? I think that I accidentally broke it when I was replacing the belt :(

Thanks for the offer but I live outside US so it is a little bit complicated, besides having that part bad can cause serious problems in your engine. Toyota OEM new here is $90 so I'll have to buy it there.
Cheers! |
