I still don't understand the US fascination with huge vehicles.
One of the main reasons I'm willing to spend so much money on my Hardbody pickup is that noone makes a small truck anymore.

It leaves me SMH.....and wondering what percentage of those buyers are buying AND ALSO being smart with their money (making sure their have adequate resources for their 'later years').

it really depends what you are doing with your vehicle. If you have a family and like to take trips, odds are something as small as a Yaris is simply a no go right from the start.
Plus a 4 cylinder Camry gets pretty good gas mileage. And all those hybrids. Even an Avalon hybrid now. You give 80% Americans 35 mpg and they will be happy. And then of course there are very few luxury options on the Yaris, and a lot of Americans simply won't buy a car without leather/moon roof/ etc. Oh, and credit. You can put that shiny new $46k Highlander Hybrid on a loan up to 7 years, or more.

Smaller cars make more sense . A lower monthly payment and less money in the tank . Money that can be used to help the economy , use towards your payment , insurance , house payment , taxes , or utilities . The '11 FIT is under $190 a month with .9 % rate . More money towards the principal . So when or if traded is less cash lost due to depreciation . The gas mileage of the FIT doesn't hurt too , http://www.fuelly.com/driver/cinder/fit . The '08 sedan is paid for .

Good. Poor sales mean lower prices and rebates.

And of course, if they really do lower the price when they switch production to France, that will help sales as well.

Yeah, I forgot about that. With CAFE, your first sentence above provides enough justification to continue to import the Yaris.

Hmm in our parking lot at work the four cylinder sedans are rapdily overtaking the monster pickups and SUVs. I think I heard someplace the Ford Focus is now the largest selling car here in the US.
Why the YAris should be doing so poorly is a mystery to me. Although its almost impossible to find very many for sale here in South Jersey. Are people in this country finally coming to their senses and buying small cars. Enquiring minds want to know.

Maybe the general public has the same opinion of the new yaris interior....I don't think I could stand to look at it every day! I'll keep my current car.

The previous gen Yaris is everywhere around here, but the third gen, not so much. I think the competition just has more to offer. Ford Fiesta, Hyundai Accent are just much nicer IMO.
Let's not forget the compact segment which is offering comparable or better fuel economy with a larger, more comfortable ride. The Honda Civic springs to mind here. Even the Corolla is nice. When my Mother in Law's Yaris was totalled recently it was a no brainer to go to the Corolla for only $1200 more since the sedan isn't offered anymore. I'm looking forward to seeing what Honda comes up with with the next Fit too. |
