'02 Echo cooling fan potential problem
I just finished replacing the Tstat, water pump, rad cap, alternator and coolant (rusted part snapped off original alternator so had to replace) and I let it run for a while to burp the air from the system. I then went around the block and let the car sit in the driveway. Nothing is leaking but using my ultragauge I noticed the temp clibed up to 201 F but the fan never kicked on.
What I'm wondering is what is the typical temp that the fan should turn on? I have noticed driving the car a few months ago that it runs about 10F hotter (188-194F)than my Yaris (181-188F) and occasionally it reached 206F temporarily and then dropped down again. If someone could let me know what the typical trip point is for the fan and if it is not turning on at all then what steps I can take to diagnose the specific problem. I don't want the engine to overheat with summer a few months away. I will be driving it this weekend and will have my gauge in it to monitor how high the temp gets. Thanks guys |

The fan in mine turns on at 206-208*. Kinda strange, at 208 I know it will come on, at 206 sometimes I'll hear it kick in too. Perhaps the signal from the temp sender is read differently by the fan workings than it is by anything plugged into the OBD port.

thanks for the input, looks like I just didn't wait long enough for it to turn on. I'll monitor it with my gauge and ensure it turn on around 208F
