Smile HOWTO Upgrading to Scion Pioneer Premium radio

Wanted to share how I successfully upgraded the radio on my 2007 Toyota Yaris car to add Bluetooth, HD Radio, and USB input with iPod/iPhone connectivity with a Pioneer Premium radio (Toyota part number PT546-00121) from 2012-2013 Scion cars.

The new radio fits perfectly, re-uses your car’s existing AUX 3.5mm mini plug port and USB ports (if available), and blends in like it came from with the car from the factory, so it won't attract attention from thieves.

Installation takes about 2-3 hours, is plug-and-play with no soldering and only requires basic hand tools.

Click here for my full writeup of installation.

Did you have to buy the parts list separately or did it come with the radio purchase from that eBay seller?

Most of the eBay listings I saw didn't include any wires, unless they chopped them off instead of unplugging them. You should budget for new wires to be on the safe side. Lots of OEM parts available on Amazon or eBay.

Great write up in the link, thanks for sharing. I'm thinking of upgrading in the next year or so

I purchased the radio & adapter cables from partsbrokersllc on eBay which I linked to in my post (I'm not affiliated with this seller)

For $150, I got:
  • Pioneer Premium radio, part number: PT546-00121
  • Scion Antenna adapter cable, part number: PT546-00120-AD
  • Scion 20+8 Pin to 28 Pin adapter cable, part number: PT546-00120-CH
  • USB adapter cable for Toyota, part number PT546-00120-US

I purchased the following parts separately
  • Scion Bluetooth microphone, part number: PT546-74120-MC
  • Toyota USB adapter cable with USB port

I did ask him if he sold the adapters and he said no so I ended up ordering all of my adapters from an online toyota dealership.

I didn't realize he gave me the 4 adapters that was listed above. I will have to return those 4 parts that I ordered separately from a dealership online. I have a couple of follow up questions...

1) Is the antenna adapter (blue wire in the red circle) and the other adapter wire suppose to be that short?...It is stretched as you can see when I plug it in.

2) I have 3 holes left on the last picture after I plugged everything in and I have the microphone and usb adapter on order...What is the function of the 3rd empty adapter hole? Navigation?

3) The unit didn't come with the side metal hinge for me to bolt on to the car. Can I get the metal hinge from the oem deck that is currently in my car?

Thanks

Congrats, looks like you got the same radio I did.

RE #1, the antenna adapter is short and a tight fit, but I didn't have any issues with radio reception

RE #2, I'm not sure what the unused plugs are for. This radio doesn't support navigation.

RE #3, yes, you can re-use the metal bracket from your old radio. This is discussed in step #10 in my post

Quote:
"10. Remove the screws and left & right metal brackets from the old radio, and install the brackets on the new radio."

I see post # 10 now. It didn't load all of the pictures previously. Do you also have instructions on how to install and take out the empty blank near the emergency brake? Did you tap the cig lighter for power? I got my usb from an eBay seller and hopefully it fits. Thanks

I haven't had time to write up instructions, but I did splice into the cigarette lighter socket. You'll need to remove the center console.

Ok, cool. I'm planning on installing the new head unit this labor day weekend. I'll post pics as much as I can for others to see.

The USB port that I bought from eBay is too big so I'll have to order another one. Also, I didn't plug the USB converter to the back of the unit because I'm still waiting for the extension cord that is shipping from China. Other than that it is a perfect fit.

Nice work. Glad to hear the install went well and hope you are enjoying the new radio.

Did you double check the connection? My install guide includes a link to the USB adapter cable with USB type A receptacle jack I bought. If you bought the same one, it plugs directly into back of the new radio. For me, I didn't need to use the Toyota USB adapter cable.
