Actually
I did get it off of Ebay. Why its offset, I dunno. As for the question about what was on it, it was just a lil grey paste, so to speak. No chunks of anything. It was just to show you guys that a hi quality filter still cannot filter all the microns. $10 bucks off ebay...Jus do it...

That wasn't any amount worth worrying about. I've used them on several Toyotas and they always have at least that much sticking to the magnet.

Metal particles trapped on the plug don't go through the oil pump. That's why old oil pump impellers (gears) are scored.

I think magnet could be more advantageous on the drain plug than the filter can. The particulate will be trapped by the filter, and good thought on the pan plug keeping the chunks out of the pump and i think oil pumps have a rough screen on the suction side) Freaky thought: will it polarize the oil additive molecules and make them act weird? Betterer?

Not to sound like a total idiot but what the heck is a filter magnet?

This looks to me like it is just a neodymium-iron-boron, or similar, magnet stuck to the stock oil pan plug. Is that correct or is this a specialty item. And if it is, is there any reason using such a magnet would be a problem? The only thing I can think of is the magnet being swept off of the plug, but that could be dealt with by just sticking the magnet to plug on the outside and letting it magnetize it.

Free as in "got them free outta a hard drive" or
Free as in "hanging free, stuck to the drain plug." I've never heard of this idea but I have to say I think it's brilliant. Stray metal is death. I'm gonna do this as soon as I figure out how-to-safely or just burn $10 on Ebay. Yarisworld rocks!
