Craig, Nice work putting this together. Most noteable is the factor of ten increase in wear material during break in; well into 15K on the odo. The High end synthetics seem to do well in my weighted analysis of sum of critical wear metals/miles on oil * 1000. My big surprise is the lads with the 10K+ OCI showing good results though they may be utilising special external filtration systems beyound what a mere mortal would bother with.

I found the high silicon numbers on so many of the samples to be a bit disturbing, especially the numbers >200. I've run 11,000+ miles on a motorcycle oil change and had numbers less than 10. My understanding is that high silicon numbers indicate bad air filtration.
But after re-sorting by vehicle mileage, it became apparent that most of the high silicon number vehicles had very low mileage. In this case, I'd guess that the high silicon count comes from break-in contamination. It looks like this illustrates a very good reason to change the oil very early. I wouldn't think 100 miles would be too soon. Also notable was that the three samples using the bypass filters were not showing the great numbers that you might expect, and the silicon count was high. I think they need to change the oil more often... Last edited by Reddog99; 11-26-2008 at 01:30 PM. |
