Quote:
I've been to So Cal, in the past. It's hot but nice. Quote:
The town that went up next to it was named after the mine shaft. Probably the most famous one is "Eighty Four", which is the home of a chain of lumber yards with the same name. We have a town named "Berlin". Another named "Venezia" (Venice). Another named "Oklahoma". Lots of odd places full of interesting people. Oddest one I know is "Jeanette", which was named after the wife of a guy who started a glass plant there. Used to be one the hubs of the glass industry in the world. The one plant I worked at was once the largest glass plant in the world. It's not even there now. The town is unique, it's like four square miles of New York City dropped into the middle of farmland and suburbs. You'll be cruising along a country road and all of the sudden you're in the Bronx. No shit, pot holes, falling down houses and people with attitudes. Then you see some nice homes, then row houses, then businesses. All sitting right next to each other. Old factories, new factories, little businesses. Union halls. Kids doing urban stuff in the streets. Riding skateboards and bikes. Hanging out in groups. Trash on the street. Drive a few more miles and you're in the sticks again. The local newspaper hates the place so they make it out to be a battle field. It's not. The streets are a bit rough, full of young kids who front at being in gangs. We're ninety six percent "white" out here, but Jeannette is probably twenty percent minorities. They're all good kids, don't bother anyone unless you give them cause. I can't argue with a man or woman standing up for themselves. Since I don't get in their business and am courteous I don't get into altercations with them. Any time someone sets up a night club in the area and the local kids go there they bust up the place. They're just full of energy, like real urban kids. It's kind of cool, being like that in the middle of farmland and suburbia. Sometimes it pisses me off when people run the place down, it's not that different in the bad ways but in the good ways it has a lot to offer. Get this; last I looked the Cops all have beards. I don't get it, but it's like a code or something. They also have these weird ass cars with spot lights on the top of the roof. All night long they prowl the streets. The main drag has speakers that play music all year around. Inviting shoppers to come into town. From Thanksgiving to New Year's its non-stop Christmas music, with interruptions to greet people to come down and shop. I worked there for a time and love the place. Some times on Sunday I'll go over and visit. I see a lot of potential for that town. Get the entrenched interests out, liberate the people and things could happen there. What was could be there again, industry, businesses, jobs and families. Gene |
