it depends, is this a race car and the spoiler is for racing ?

a 'spoiler' can decrease drag if it is engineered and tuned to the race event and vehicle

terms: spoiler=spoils airflow....think drag

wing or airfoil=downforce or lifting force

do you mean airfoil or wing ?
it adds down force to increase traction so the car
can pull more G's and go faster in turns. works on the track
at high speeds. also adds traction and stability for straight line.

or is this a street car... and the spoiler doesn't do a damn thing ?
99.99999% of the spoilers you see on the street do not do anything
but look stupid, because they are stupid. the front lower bumper is also
a spoiler, and in this location is for drag reduction

some cars have air diverters which direct air down across the back window
to clear rain and mist. busses have these too, and minivans

some serious street cars (think 400-1000 hp) and $$$,$$$ have wings which
are fixed, or they retract. these are for high speed stability... because after 150mph,
the rear end can get squirrely if you have power to spare and blip the throttle.
it keeps the rear planted. below 150, you aren't gonna need one (mostly)
(the above varies by car weight, HP, and body type. what I said was just generic)

anyway, your question is far too loaded for one answer. pick a car, show us the wing or spoiler
Toyota supra ? stock, it is for looks only. is this the 1000hp Supra ?

the aerodynamics of a 2005 ferarri gt550 (i think that's right...) will enable it to be driven upside down at 149 mph...just dont plan on a tail wind cuz you'll fall lol

any way, on a serious note, unless you're racing just get one that looks good...and dont mount it upside down either...or buy a drift spoiler for a street car. drag spoilers add weight with speed, drift spoilers take weight away with speed so the rear wheels will spin easier.

there's a lot to consider if you're reducing drag...think along the lines of those little shark fin thingys' that's in the appearance section right now, rear valence or difusors, front lips or spoilers...rocker panels or even under-body spoiler/difusor/covers. anything that reduces drag will increase MPG.

For the Supra OEM spoiler, it was meant to increase down force at freeway speeds, above 50 MPH. The aerodynamics of the car creates lift in the rear which makes for instability. The spoiler adds down force to keep the handling stable at high speed.
