Me too! I only drive 2 miles each way to work and back. My first 2 tanks I babied it. I never accelerated hard or downshifted. I am on my third tank now and have a little harder on it. I will see if it makes a difference. And yes I have it in drive. lol.

I average 28 MPG. I drive about 25 miles to work and back everyday with about 4 miles of that in the city. I leave for work at 5 AM so traffic is not a problem. It probably doesn't help that I drive my Yaris like it's stolen.

Short distances like that will kill your MPG as the engine never fully warms up.

With such a short commute (good planning on your part?) I would bicycle it year round, skipping only the snowiest, slushiest days.

UPDATE ON MY CURRENT TANK! CANT EVEN BELIEVE IT!

ok seriously this is all 50% mixed highway and city driving, and city driving is delivering pizza.

dropped the first bar at 93 miles
dropped the second at 160 miles
just dropped the third at 219 miles

will keep you updated on the rest of the tank, i would be blown away if i was able to hit 50mpg on mixed driving!!

i am sooo close to 50mpg, i cant even believe it
Oh and i drive 55-60 on the highway, with DFCO whenever i have the chance. In town i take accelerations easy, upshift at about 2500 rpm's and try to keep it constant at 40-50mph. hard to do with all the lights though, even though that means more DFCO :).

Yeppers! You're close. I was at 237 mi when the third bar dropped off... got 504 miles to that tank when all was done. Unfortunately, it took 10.253 gallons to fill.

Hopefully, soon I will break 50 MPG?

Good luck with your MPG...

i started caring less about the mileage because i was at work, so i was rushed to get things delivered.

more updates to come, ill be sure to post my average over the whole tank.

Just filled up 9.087 gallons, with 412.2 miles on the tank.
That calculates to 45.36mpg with 50% city and 50% highway, thats pretty damn good. If thats mixed, imagine what im actually getting on the highway... Almost as good as an freaking prius!

Such a discrepancy between you and the average fuel economy makes me start to get concerned you are running lean or have a mechanical problem, potentially no bueno. No one said anything like this so I thought I would. Motors and cars do vary and I hope you have a ringer, but a red flag was raised in the back of my head. Let us know how it goes. :)

Pretty impressive MPG for pizza delivery. That type of driving is usual infamous for yielding the worst results.

I'm boggled when I hear people say they average below 30 mpg. I think if you drove the Yaris pedal to the metal, stop and go, it would be around 30 mpg.

I am amazed to hear that some people are getting 45+. I am averaging 35.5mpg over the life, with a low of 29.6mpg and a high of only 40mpg. Even on really long sections of cruise control at moderate speeds, I generally only get about 38mpg. I do drive the manual transmission, so that will reduce the mileage a bit since the final gear ratio is a bit lower, but I see many posts from other manual owners that claim 45+ too. Time to investigate my car.
