Big trip milage

So, I recently drove 500 miles from Eugen, OR up to Spokane, WA to get married, Then from Spokane Up to Fairmont, BC, then from Fairmont to Lake Louise/Banff/Canmore, and then all the way back to Eugene, OR. With the exception of the last 196 miles (Gassed up at The Dalles) I have stats for the whole trip.

Miles 2292.9
Gallons 52.787
MPG's 43.44

Car is now over 51,500 miles in 2.5years.

This weekend i'll be putting another 1000 miles on the car, as I'll be playing in Hoopfest in Spokane (last year we got 2nd in our bracket, aiming for 1st this year).

Thanks so much for posting this!

I just bought a 2010 Auto Yaris sedan and I'm taking a cross-country trip starting Sunday.

It's 2300 miles one-way to my 1st destination (Arkansas).

I live up near Tacoma. How does the Yaris handle the passes? Do you know about what your avg speed was?

Thanks again and congrats on the Marriage! Life as you know it......is over!! Just kidding

Mine is an 08 manual Hatch
I have a scanguage which really helps learn how to drive efficiently, and I did a lot of coasting and some drafting (2 seconds behind). The drafting really helped me out in the columbia gorge (oregon I84, which always sucks down my mpgs). I also run 44psi on my tires. Everything mechanical on the car is stock. Average speed was probably around 63-5mph... Most of the driving I did in Canada was at 50-60mph.

The only serious problem you'll notice with the yaris on long trips is when it goes head to head with strong gusts of wind (like in the columbia gorge). If you have stock tires the yaris will be pushed around by the wind a bit. Since you are tacoma, you shouldn't have an issue with that at all. The only thing I think you will come up against is the auto transmission having trouble finding the right gear when going up steep mountain passes.... but every auto-trans I've ever driven has been that way.

Yeah, it does a lot of downshifting on steep hills, and as it's a four speed those are BIG downshifts!

Thanks for the quick responses.

I'm expecting the issue with the auto trans down-shifting to climb the grades.

I considered the manual because I was used to it in my 95 Saturn, but outside of this trip, the car will be doing a lot of commuting (1-2-3-4-5-stoplight-1-2-3-4-5 stoplight, etc). So I decided to go with the Auto trans.

My initial plan is to not use the cruise control until I get east of Denver and manually down-shift when negotiating the mountain passes.

Thanks again! This site rocks

your quite capable of getting 40+ with the auto sedan . We've been averaging close to 41 as of lately . Keep tires at 35 > 36 p.s.i.. No SCANGUAGE , KIWI or ECO-METER used in it . May remove the ECO-METER from the automatic 3 door and install in the '08 auto sedan to see if can top the low 40s' . The warm weather helps alot .
