I'm interested in this as well
I just poked around in my tail light assembly, and the stock buld is this MASSIVe compared to an LED. Also, it's white. I dont' think you'll need a red LED. Size wise it's about the side of my thumb Last edited by Betrivent; 10-05-2010 at 12:47 PM. |

Great way to save tons of cash on replacing the entire tail light with LED.

If you're changing out the taillights themselves, you'll get the best illumination by using red LED bulbs. The ones that offer the most degrees of spread light (usually 120*, although my parking lamps in the headlights are 270*) will work the best. The reason you'll want the red ones is that the lens of the taillamps are also red. They will filter out most of the brightness of a standard white bulb because there isn't a lot of red light in the white part of the visible spectrum. Also, as many benefits as LEDs have, brightness in comparison to a stock incandescent is not one of them. So you'll want the biggest bulb you can get through the stock hole with as many red-lit diodes on it as possible.
I haven't converted my taillamps or signals yet, but my reverse lights are LED whites, and they are a significantly cooler white (almost bluish tinted) than the stock ones were. I may grab some pictures later. Hope this helps. -SAV

I got these from vleds, they are a lot more powerful than the incandescent bulbs, this SMD LED's create a really cool light pattern on the back mirrors.

So it's best to get red LEDs for the brake/tail, and not white, right?

Which is strange, considering my stock bulbs are white.

Mine too. When I changed to my aftermarket tail light, it uses the old-style push-in and turn bulbs. Had a heckuva time getting those at the auto parts store, as the lights did not come with bulbs. In mine now I have 2 white bulbs and one amber in each light.

Incandescents burn and light differently from LEDs. They throw the light to all the mirrors within the taillamp lens themselves. LEDs have much more of a direct path of light and therefore to get maximum amount of light through the lenses, you'll want to use red LEDs in red lenses, amber LEDs in turnsignal lenses, etc.
