my take (largely uneducated, but somewhat thought out):

higher octane gas only helps in a "non-premium required" car if the ECU is sophisticated enough to advance/retard the timing to compensate for knock. Most, if not all, modern cars can pull the timing (retard) when knock is detected. Many cars though will not advance the timing past a certain point; running a less knock prone fuel does not necessarily make more power because the engine cannot fully utilize the increase in detonation protection.

i agree.

one of my previous cars would be 6seconds faster to 200k/hr if i used 100octane over 91 octane. it was crazy the difference it made. sure the fuel was 25c more a L.. but was lots more fun to drive hehe.

in my yaris 1.3L with 215/35/18's on.
regular 91octane i got 557km to 35.53L
regular 95' 615km to 37.35L
premuim 98 was a lil less cos of i was tired of only changing at 3-3500 rpms
with 95 octane and a k&n panel filter i got 632km to 36.8L

over here in Aus we have a 95octane with up to 10% ethonol in it and it doesn't give good fuel economy at all, i've also noticed the engine runs a bit hotter with the ethonal fuel.

woo.

Did both examples in the comparison you are bringing up have no ethanol or if they both had ethanol in the gas was it the same percentage?

I use 87 octane. I have used 85 and 86 octane in locations that have it instead of 87 octane....with no obvious adverse consequences. I do a gasbuddy.com search before getting gas and go to the cheapest station that is within a reasonable distance...and that is not a cash only station (Gotta get those air miles!)

well i used to ask similar questions like ages ago lol, but after hearing everyone out and did my own testings here and there, which i finally came across with only top 3 gas station i would go....

First choice-76 gas station(might be pricey, but to me i feel my car a bit more well rounded with smoothness and performance)

Second Choice-Cheveron, i can feel the cleaning power for my 07 HB

Third Choice-Shell, its a smooth ride with shell.

mind me, i normally use the mid-grade on mine, but once in awhile i switch to the best octane due to it helps a little for cleaning power. and by the way 76 gas also gives me both smoothness and cleaning power which equals better performance, thats in my own opinions, some of us here might agree and some might not...but i wouldn't go anything cheaper like the BP gas station, aka Arco, cus for some reason my gas burns so freaking fast that a full tank will only last me like 4 days comparing using other better brands where they're only like 20-30cents higher.....and plus arco from what i heard will do damage on ur car as well....also for the record, i do both freeway/highway and streets....and i normally get 340-350 miles for my top 3 gas i normally uses and when i use arco i get around 300-315 miles for full tank...so there thats what i've know and like i said, some of us may agree what im saying and some may disagree...

hope this helps
