Peeves

Things that bother me. I'm a few weeks away from finishing my Degree in Automotive Technology, and the one thing that bugs me is when someone pretends to know a lot about cars but uses the word "motor" when they really mean Engine. A motor is electric and uses electricity passing through winding to create magnetic fields and move a stator. An Engine uses the heat energy from the controlled burning fuel to create a mechanical action or motion.

Simply put, unless it is a hybrid or full electric, it has an engine, not a motor.

This is very true. Folks use the terms interchangeably. I can give you one of mine. Everyone calls their mobile phones "cell" phones. There have not been cell phones for at least 10 years. A cellular phone was old TDM tech whereas once the phones went digital and pretty much moved into what has been out there since actually what GSM started to do with their evolution around 2000 is a mobile telephony network. I won't bore you with further details, but that bothers me just as much as it apparently bothers you with the engine vs motor terminology. Another for me is calling all inline skates "Rollerblades" or those unfortunates that called mp3 players from various manufacturers iPods.

Damn straight. Now where do I get a gallon of engine oil?

They're called cell phones because the base stations form cells of phone coverage. The actual technology, be that AMPS, TDMA, CDMA, GSM, UMTS etc has nothing to do with that.

Hmmm. Is that why they are called "motor vehicles" as opposed to "engine vehicles"?

Actually, as an engineer nomenclature is key. The problem with motor vs. engine is that they truly are interchangeable in regards to vehicles.

By definition:
A motor is: a machine that produces motion or power for doing work
An engine is: a machine that changes energy into mechanical motion

If you are referring to a device that uses electric current as the power source, then the correct nomenclature is electric motor. To simply call something a motor, you are not specifying the power source of said device.

In regards to your post, I reserve the term "motor" primarily for electric motors, and "engine" for gasoline/diesel engines. Although I sometimes say "motor swap" instead of "engine swap."

I don't care what people call the engine as long as it gets the point across.

Things that grind my gears

- slow drivers in left/passing lane
- car accident rubber neckers who do a 180 in their seat to stare down an accident on the other side of the highway
- inconsiderate or selfish drivers who won't let you by or through just because? Id do it for you, why not do it for me?

Oh man, this exactly. I'm starting to hate driving around my city. Especially during spring break. Ugh.

My peeve

Gathering the tools you need to do a job under the car, shimming yourself under said car with tools, dropping that socket that slipped out of your hands and performing ninja like moves to catch it only to fail while it begins to roll down the driveway you attempt one final stretch and slam your hand to grab it but then stare at the horizon of your hand and watch the socket sink into the distance... at that moment you wish you had the FORCE...

And specific to here:

It's not like you'd refer to your wife as "my wives," so why would you refer to your one Yaris as "my Yari."

Ok, so in that case I pose this: the term "cellular phone" is a misnomer because the phone is not cellular, the network is.
