well, 'any old' ziptie may crack, rot, break, not do the job, cut into the housing
a Toyota spec ziptie will just plain work. the difference between walmart zipties and a good one can be huge |

I do have some ties that are designed for use in hot conditions and are UV rated. Might as well use one of those. |

Well I got mine fixed and it doesn't rattle now. I asked the guy what was replaced or what part he needed and apparently there is a bracket that was redesigned to prevent the cable rubbing.

Despite being an '10...mine had this issue sometimes. Went out this morning and did the ol' ziptie.....problem solved.
Now I just hope Toyota doesn't void the warranty for using an aftermarket tie. Last edited by Billiam; 04-19-2010 at 04:43 PM. |

I noticed this noise on mine 2010 LB the other day but didn't think too much about it until I found this thread. I just went out and popped my hood and my cable is just resting against the bracket. I will do the old zip tie fix tomorrow at work myself. I can't help but to wonder what it would take to get my local dealership to fix it under warranty since the TSB only covers up to 2009 models.

If you don't mind cold you pop your hood and see what was actually done to fix it? I am just curious to see if they used some form of zip tie or if they actually replaced a part. The bracket is easily visible from under the hood. thanks.

hey everyone I have a 2007 sedan and experience the same problem when in reverse. I'll try the ziptie method and see what happens.
However, there is another rattle i'm experiencing (surprise surprise). When the fan comes on and runs while idleing in park (or at a light while in drive) the vibration causes the hood to rattle against the part of the car it rests against while closed. I verified this by having my wife put the car in drive while holding the brake. When I put my hand on the hood, the noise stops. I'm guessing this has to do with the fact that there is not much padding along the edges of the hood. Any ideas to absorb the vibration and stop the rattle? a sticky foam piece of some kind? |

That is the cable. Check the exhaust heat shield as well, as the cable travels along it, and if any of the mounting screws have pulled through the aluminum it will rattle.

I checked mine and the shift cable was under the wire support and unattached. Close to the exhaust. Is yours like that as well?
I think it makes more sense for the cable to be installed above the bracket, so the support would pull it away from exhaust. I could not move it enough and just zip tied it below the wire support. The access from above the engine was very tight. Does it look like it's correct now? |

Thanks! There is still some knocking/rattling sound in reverse especially on cold engine. Maybe from somewhere else?

Anyone have a picture of what this looks like from above? I'd rather try to it without jacking the car up.
Also, if i do have to jack the car up, because its too low to crawl under it, where are safe points to use jack stands? |
