2006 Yaris RS Hatchback + Garmin Dash Cam 20
Hello,
I purchased a Garmin Dash Cam 20 about a week ago and use it plugged into the cigarette Lighter Port below the steering Wheel. Today I noticed that my heater motor starts off at regular speed but slows down to almost nothing and to get it to work I need to shut the heater fan off. It comes back to life a couple minutes later but slows down again. I don't know if this is a coincidence but I am wondering if the Garmin is drawing too much Current for my Yaris to handle? The specs on the Garmin power cable are 12VDC input 1.3 Amp draw for current and outputs 2 Amp. I'm not sure of what the current limit is for the Yaris so I am asking for advice whether the Yaris just isn't up to this kind of load? I'm going to discontinue using the Garmin tomorrow for the drive to work and see if the heater fan works as it should or slows down again. Thanks for your advice and info that you can offer. A 2amp draw should not have the affect you are describing. Are you running any other electrical loads at the same time? Massive stereo maybe?

Hello,
Just regular radio and Headlights in morning, radio and Garmin this afternoon when I noticed the heater fan issue. Thank you for your question. VM |

I suspect it may well be unrelated. Unplug the dash cam and drive around for a few days and see if the problem occurs without it.

Agreed. If you were drawing enough to effect the rest of the system you would have blown the AUX fuse.

Not a chance. Toyota uses a very cheap fan for the heater(mine is noisy as hell).

Hi everyone,
Yes, it is unrelated...I unplugged the dash cam, ran all day in case battery needed a charge and still no luck. The heater fan has now stopped working all together and I don't see any warning light about battery or alternator so I think it is the Heater Fan itself. I'm hoping that it is maybe just a relay, but I do have an appointment with my Toyota dealer in 10 days time to look at it. Just in time for Candian Winter! lol. Thanks for everyone's advice and observations; I do appreciate it! VM |
