I have very fond memories of the 2002 Echo sedan I had. My dad still drives it and it's been a great car. I think it has 210,000 miles on it now.
If you like your Echo, find a 07-12 Yaris sedan. It's basically a slightly newer version of what you're used to and I really really like mine. Mine is an autotragic, find one with a stick and you should be good. As for the newer model, my 2014 gets beaten all over Chicago carrying passengers and I usually average 31 MPG. Keep in mind, however, that this includes all sorts of unfavorable conditions. Jack rabbit starts, flying across intersections, lots of sitting and idling, general taxi like abuse, and so forth. It's an automatic because forget using a clutch for a long 20 hour day in constant traffic. So far, besides some ridiculous build quality concerns on the interior, it's been a very good car.
