Hard to steer
Hello,
Since the last month, some time steering becomes really hard when I start the car. To fix it, I shut it off and restart it, then it's good. Since last weekend it seems to be happening more and more and now the car can shut off by itself when I'm waiting at a traffic light. Restarting is not a problem, but now it stays hard to steer at low speed. I know there was a recall in 2013 for 2012 Yaris about that, but I got my car in 2016. Also I get a P0500 error, which is a speed sensor. Do you think it's related? Or what can be fix here? (2012 Yaris 3 doors manual) Last edited by Alain93; 11-04-2021 at 12:42 PM. |

I can't speak to the stalling issue.
The wheel speed sensor issue can cause the hard steering. If similar to a 2nd gen yaris (That's the only repair manual I have access to at this time), a faulty wheel speed sensor will disable speed sensitive steering assistance. The repair manual suggests that it won't throw a power steering fault light for this issue. Does the steering feel return to normal once you go over 40mph? Might be worthwhile to run your vin through the nhtsa database https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if you have an affected yaris for the power steering recall. |

Hi,
thanks that guy. Yes the steering feel normal once I'm driving. But where is this speed sensor? I looked under the battery, I could see only the engine mount. I have to say that documentation for 3rd gen is nonexistent on google. Last edited by Alain93; 11-10-2021 at 11:12 AM. |

The service manual for the 3rd gen to my knowledge was digital only, and was built using internet explorer which is being phased out. So far the 2nd gen manual is close enough.
As far as speed sensors: there are 5 I can see from the wiring diagram: 1 in the transmission, and 4 wheel speed sensors, one attached to each wheel. The transmission speed sensor also feeds to your speedometer, does your speedometer operate correctly? Or does it seem to bounce a bit? Any other lights on the dash? If any of the wheel speed sensors are faulty, it should be throwing an abs light. Is the P0500 the only code it is displaying? |

The only light ON is the Steering light.
I cleared the P0500 with TorquePro. I went for a ride around the bloc, without any light on the dash, the steering was fine until I reached 45 mph and suddenly the steering light came ON with a beep, I slowed down to take a turn and the steering was hard, when I got to my driveway and braked to a stop the car stalled. The speedometer seemed fine. And I didn't get the error back. I need to find this speed sensor and find a way to test it. |

Found some part diagrams through Toyota's part sites that might help.
https://parts.toyota.com/a/Toyota_2012_Yaris-Liftback-3-Door-MT/_65512_6717707/CLUTCH-HOUSING--TRANSMISSION-CASE-MTM/112430-3302.html Picture of the Transmission case https://parts.toyota.com/a/Toyota_20...2430-3304.html Picture of the transmission speed sensor. Between those, it appears the transmission speed sensor is on the back side of top of the transmission case. Probably buried underneath the throttle body coolant lines. I also found this on repair video on youtube that seems similar to your symptoms. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mFefj8ZLkPE Video isn't in english but from what I gathered, the power steering ecu was the culprit in their case. |

Thanks, yes I saw that video, I hope it's not the PS ECU.
