2005 Toyota Yaris
Variant SCP12(H) 1.3L
I have a vehicle with code P1346 - VVT sensor/camshaft position range performance problem. What diagnosis can I do myself before getting a mechanic to look at it. I did notice the code on purchase but seeing as the car drove great I ignored it plus it was cheap. Where should I start to diagnose this. Obviously check around the sensor and do some basic multimeter checks on the wires etc. But what else can be done? Should I inspect the chain. If so what am I looking for? The code comes back immediately after being cleared so it's not going away. Drives completely fine although idle is a bit weak but it doesn't cut out. First one I've owned so it could just be a Yaris thing I dont know. But I do remember an odd in and out vibration when idling and it goes almost silent as if the engine is going to cut out, hard to explain. It was sold to me like this with tape over the engine light which I didn't notice at the time but i did spot the code as I had techstream and a laptop with me but ignored it due to it driving fine. Also monitors for o2 and catalyst show as incomplete pretty sure they were showing that before clearing codes. Don't know what to make of it yet. My main issue is getting rid of this P code. What should I be checking? |

You can look at the wheel the sensor reads off of for damage or wobble.

VVT sensor/camshaft error and you're telling him to look for wobbly wheels.

First, check the mechanical timing marks line up properly.

Did some random searching and found this entry in a discussion where focus was primarily on potential timing issue.
"Hey Steve! I managed to get the Code 1346 not come back after I have added a quart of marvel mystery oil to crankcase. I think the VVTI was sticking or something and had some gunk which the additive in MMO helped to dislodge. Anyway the car runs fine now and needs exhaust work. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. Regards, Ron" You often hear about the wonders of MMO so who knows.

i would agree with the stretched chain...but i too would also run some engine cleaner or MMO thru it first, the VVT's are very small passages and can gunk up pretty bad and pull this code, im not sure how many of you guys have actualy opened one up...i have, mine was sticking a littel but for other reasons..opened it up just to take a look
run some cleaner, some MMO and see if it clears up.... |
